Also known as Martin Marietta Orangeburg Quarry
Where: Berkeley County, South Carolina (33.3° N, 80.3° W: paleocoordinates 33.7° N, 68.8° W)
• coordinate based on nearby landmark
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Santee Limestone Formation, Lutetian (47.8 - 41.3 Ma)
• From Santee Formation, which is overlain unconformably by the Cross Formation, or Cross Member of the Santee Formation. The Santee Formation is also considered to be equivalent in age to the "McBean" Formation, while the Cross Formation is a down-dip equivalent of the lower Clinchfield Formation. The contact between the Santee Formation (s.s.) and the Cross Formation is approximately equivalent to the contact between the Lisbon Formation and Gosport Sand in the Gulf Coast. These are of Claibornian age=Lutetian (late Middle Eocene).
• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: offshore shelf; lithified, ferruginous, glauconitic, gray, white limestone
Size class: macrofossils
Preservation: mold/impression, original calcite
Reposited in the ANSP, USNM
Collection methods: salvage, quarrying, surface (float),
• Collections reposited at the University of North Carolina, USNM, and ANSP. Some new collecting by D. Campbell.
